Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 large onion Can use sweet onions, red onions, or shallots.
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour Substitute with gluten-free flour or cornstarch for gluten-free option.
  • 1 large egg A vegan alternative is a flaxseed egg or unsweetened applesauce.
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs Regular breadcrumbs can also be used, but panko is preferred for extra crunch.
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • as needed olive oil spray For lightly spraying the air fryer basket.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Slice the onion into thin rings, ensuring they are evenly sliced.
  • Prepare three bowls: in the first, add all-purpose flour; in the second, beat the egg; in the third, mix panko breadcrumbs with garlic powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.

Coating

  • Coat each onion ring in flour to help the egg adhere.
  • Dip the floured onion ring into the beaten egg, ensuring thorough coating.
  • Coat with the breadcrumb mixture, pressing gently to ensure adherence.

Cooking

  • Preheat the air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for 3-5 minutes.
  • Lightly spray the air fryer basket with olive oil spray to prevent sticking.
  • Place the onion rings in the air fryer basket in a single layer, avoiding overcrowding.
  • Air fry for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until crispy and golden brown.

Notes

Ensure your onion rings are not overcrowded for even crispiness. Consider experimenting with spices like cayenne or Italian herbs for extra flavor. To store, place in an airtight container and reheat in the air fryer to regain crispiness.
