  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 4 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • cups boiling water

  • ¾ cup bittersweet chocolate chips for deeper chocolate flavor
  • 1 cup chopped nuts like pecans or walnuts
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen berries for tartness

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Melt the unsalted butter in the baking dish.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • Whisk together the milk and vanilla extract.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Fold in chocolate chips if using.

Baking

  • Pour the batter over the melted butter in the dish.
  • In a small bowl, mix together granulated sugar and cocoa powder, then sprinkle over the batter.
  • Gently pour boiling water over the top without stirring.
  • Bake for 30-40 minutes at 350°F (180°C) until the edges are golden brown and the center is set.
