Ingredients

For the Patties

  • 1 pound ground beef Can substitute with ground turkey or chicken.
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs Can be substituted with crushed crackers or oats.
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 each egg
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil For frying the patties.

For the Gravy

  • 1 cup mushrooms, sliced Fresh or canned mushrooms can be used.
  • 1 cup onion, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons flour

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onion, egg, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix well and shape the mixture into patties (about four to six, depending on size).
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat.

Cooking

  • Once hot, add the patty shapes, cooking them until browned on both sides (about 3-4 minutes per side). Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, add sliced mushrooms and onions. Cook for about 5-7 minutes or until softened and slightly caramelized.
  • Sprinkle flour over the sautéed mushrooms and onions, stirring to combine.
  • Slowly pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens (about 3-5 minutes).
  • Return the cooked patties to the skillet, ensuring they are immersed in the gravy. Cover and let simmer for about 10-15 minutes until the patties are fully cooked through.

Serving

  • Serve your Salisbury Steak with the rich gravy draped over a bed of mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

Allow the patties to rest after cooking for juicier results. Optionally, add herbs for extra flavor.
