  • 1 cup butter Use unsalted butter for better flavor control.
  • 0.75 cup chopped onion Chop finely for even distribution.
  • 12 cups fresh bread cubes Use day-old bread for the best texture.
  • 1.5 pints fresh oysters, coarsely chopped Reserve the oyster liquor.
  • 1.5 cups chopped celery with leaves
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt Adjust according to taste.
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 0.5 teaspoon thyme leaves
  • 0.5 teaspoon poultry seasoning

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • In a Dutch oven or large heavy pot, heat the butter over medium-high heat. Cook and stir the chopped onion until tender, about 5 minutes.
  • Remove the pot from heat and stir in the bread cubes, chopped oysters, reserved oyster liquor, chopped celery, salt, black pepper, thyme, and poultry seasoning.
  • Spoon the mixture into the prepared baking pan and cover tightly with aluminum foil.

Baking

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes. Remove the aluminum foil and continue baking until the top is lightly browned, about 20 more minutes.

Notes

Oyster Dressing can be served as a side dish during your Thanksgiving meal. It pairs perfectly with roast turkey and gravy. To store, let it cool completely and place it in an airtight container. It can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
